Heavy Construction Projects – Bridges/MarineWicomico County, Sharptown, MD – SR 313Owner: Maryland State Highway Administration Completion Date: 1987 This project consisted of construction of a new 1,400-foot long bridge over the Nanticoke River and the removal of the existing bridge together with associated approach street construction. The foundation work required the installation of 66-inch diameter concrete cylinder piles to depths in excess of 100 feet and 20-inch diameter steel pipe piles to depths in excess of 220 feet. Pile load tests up to 700-ton capacity were required. The project included wetland dredging and restoration. Work in the navigation channel included the installation of a wood pile fender system and dolphins to protect the bridge piers.
